 ”Why are you doing this?” asked Claudia. She could hear the sobs in her voice and feel the weight of the tears in her eyes. The Doctor had his back to her, turning dials with a practiced, concentrated grace. He ignored her question. “You’re just going to make me leave him there? Again? Why?”

“Because that’s the way things are,” said the Doctor softly. Claudia pressed her hand over her mouth to hold back her screams, turning away from the Doctor until she could speak again. When she did, she couldn’t bring herself to look at him.

“He’s my best friend,” she managed to bite out. “I won’t leave him to die again, you can change it. You promised-!”

“I promised you a great many things, Claudia,” shouted the Doctor, slamming his hand against the controls and turned to face her. “I promised a great amount of people many wonderful, terrible things that I never give them. Because I lie. The Doctor lies.”

“Why would you lie to me?!” screamed Claudia, her tears falling down her face and dropping onto the TARDIS floor. “I’ve lost so many people that I love and you know that. Why would you lie to me?”

The Doctor all but flew away from his controls, making long strides across the TARDIS until he was nose to nose with her. He grabbed her arms and held her in place, just in case she wanted to turn away. He stared down at her, his eyes serious and old and bright with tears of his own. When he spoke his voice was low and clear.

“Because I am a selfish man and I wanted you to love me back.”
