She wasn’t ready to go, to leave all her friends and the only real home she’d ever known but she had to. She couldn’t stay. She knew running would only make them chase her, it made her look guilty, but she needed to escape. She needed someone who trusted her blindly beyond a reasonable doubt.
Claudia stopped short halfway off the pourch, stumbling forward because she had been prepared to leap over the steps. The corners of her mouth pulled down.
“Hurry up Donovan,” said the Doctor after having leaned out of the TARDIS. “Haven’t got all day.”
“Except you have,” Claudia sassed back, getting her footing and half-jogging across the lawn toward the Doctor. “Time, I mean. You’ve got like all of it.”
The Doctor gave her a look, but she was focused on the grass stains on the toes of her Chucks. “Point. Claudia, you don’t have to leave.”
“Huh?” Claudia looked up, eyebrows drawn together. She ran through what he’d said and her face smoothed over. “Oh…yeah I…I-“
The Doctor stared down at her sympathetically - not pityingly, never sorry for her - and reached out to cup her face with his hands, forcing her to look him in the eyes. “Clever Claudia Donovan. Wonderful, brilliant, clever Claudia Donovan. We are going to have so many brilliant adventures you and I. And you will never regret it; not for a moment.”
“Just-” Claudia drew a shaky breath, her chest swelling with feelings of sadness and excitment and she didn’t know which one to hold on to. “Just take me somewhere fantastic.”
The Doctor pressed his forehead against hers, the way he’d done to so many companions so many times before and thought very, very hard all of the comforting things he would never ever say out loud. ”Always, Claudia Donovan.”
